The dominant frequency of the main section of the male calling song distinguishes 13-yr cicada Magicicada neotredecim from its congener 13-yr Magicicada tredecim where their distributions overlap (M. tredecim dominant pitch is around 1.1 kHz).  Outside their region of overlap, the dominant pitch of M. neotredecim is lower (around 1.35 kHz), more or less matching that of 17-yr M. septendecim (which it overlaps/abuts only trivially), but still higher than that of M. tredecim.
