Ellipes monticolus

Diagnostic description:

Many tridactylids have a stridulatory apparatus in the male, comprised of a scraper on the underside of the tegmen and a file on the fourth abdominal tergite. E. monticolus possesses such a structure (Fig. 7), but almost nothing is known of the nature or function of the calls they may produce. Deyrup and Eisner (1996) speculated that song could be an important isolating mechanism in tridactylids, but no attempts have been made to record the calls of any species of pygmy mole cricket. [1]
