Behaviour

Recently Jacqueline Belwood of the Univ. of Florida (pers. comm.) has shown that an insectivorous bat, Tonatia sylvicola, can exploit orthopteran calling songs. Working in Panama, she attracted bats of this and other foliage-gleaning species to crude stridulatory imitations (sounds generated with combs and zippers) and to recordings of an unknown tettigoniid species. T. sylvicola responded positively to recorded prey sounds in a flight cage.
